In a crucial news development, Cricket Australia (CA) have confirmed that their regular ODI captain Pat Cummins will not be available for the upcoming three-match ODI series in India due to family commitments. Australia will be taking on India in the first ODI match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai starting on 17 March, 2023. The visiting Australian team recently ended up losing the Border Gavaskar Trophy for the fourth time in a row.

IND vs AUS: Pat Cummins to miss India vs Australia ODI Series? Who is Australia Captain?

Cricket Australia have announced that Steve Smith will captain the national team in the forthcoming three-match ODI series against India starting from Friday. After missing the last two Test matches of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023, Pat Cummins will not be returning for the ODI series as his mother died from breast cancer last week. This also means that just like the Test matches, Smith will have the responsibility to lead the Australia team in ODIs as well. However, the Australian team management have gone against naming a replacement for Cummins after right-arm pacer Nathan Ellis was recently drafted into the ODI squad for the injured Jhye Richardson.

Australia are now left with the likes of Mitchell Starc, Nathan Ellis and Sean Abbott as their frontline fast bowlers alongside all-rounder like Marcus Stoinis, Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh.
