The biggest breaking news update coming from the Australian dressing room is that their senior opening batsman David Warner is not playing the first ODI match against India being hosted at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After having lost the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023 four-match Test series 1-2, Australia will now be playing a three-match ODI series in India during this all-important 50-overs ICC World Cup year. Australia also won all of their last 3 ODI matches against England.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Australia captain Steve Smith revealed the big news that David Warner is still not completely fit and thus, he is not part of the playing 11 for this first ODI match against India. Incidentally, Warner suffered a concussion and also a fracture on his left elbow during the second Test match in India and he subsequently missed the last two Test matches of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023. Smith cleared the fact that all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will open the batting alongside Travis Head in this game.
“Good toss to lose. Happy batting first because I didn’t know what to do. We got to try our best to adjust to these conditions, and get our combinations right with the WC in mind. I think we played well in the back end (on BGT series), and plenty of fresh faces to choose from. Alex Carey is sick so he has gone home, so Josh Inglis will come in today. David Warner is not yet fully fit, so Mitch Marsh will open the batting. The rest of the changes will come on the big television here soon enough,” said Australia captain Steve Smith during the toss.
