In a crucial news development, Indian captain Rohit Sharma will not be playing the first of the three ODI matches against Australia scheduled to begin at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 17 March, 2023. Under the captaincy of Rohit, the Indian team sealed a fabulous 2-1 Test series victory over Australia in the recently concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023 at home. India also ended up winning both of their previous two ODI series at home against New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had earlier revealed that skipper Rohit Sharma will not be available for selection in the opening ODI game against Australia in Mumbai because of his family commitments. It is also to be noted that the right-handed senior opener has no injury concerns and will be available for the last two ODI matches of the series. Rohit had been batting really well at the top of the order in the ODI format of the game during the recent while and also scored a stunning century in the final ODI against New Zealand. On the other hand, all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been appointed as the stand-in captain for the first ODI against the Aussie team and he has already cleared that Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill will be opening the batting.
