IND vs NZ: Why is Shreyas Iyer Not Playing Today’s India vs New Zealand 1st ODI?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out for the New Zealand ODI series due to a back injury. Incidentally, the right-handed middle order batsman is not part of the India squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against New Zealand. Iyer did not performed very well with the bat in the recently concluded three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka at home. The BCCI also named explosive batsman Rajat Patidar as the replacement in the ODI squad. However, it will be interesting to see whether Shreyas Iyer will be able to gain complete fitness before the first Test match against Australia starting from 9 February, 2023.

“Team India batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series against New Zealand due to a back injury. He will be heading to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for further assessment and management. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Rajat Patidar as replacement for Shreyas Iyer,” said the official statement released by the BCCI.
