India put on a strong show in their Champions Trophy opener, securing a six-wicket win against Bangladesh. Shubman Gill, Mohammed Shami, and Axar Patel played key roles, while Virat Kohli struggled to make an impact. India now turns its attention to the much-anticipated clash against Pakistan on Sunday.
Shubman Gill – 9.5/10
Gill was the star of the show, delivering his first century in an ICC event. His unbeaten 101 off 129 balls ensured India’s successful chase. Before this, his highest ICC tournament score was 92 in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Now, he seems ready to take on the role of a reliable chase master for India.
Mohammed Shami – 9/10
Shami reminded everyone of his class, claiming a five-wicket haul in his first ICC event match after returning to international cricket. He tore through Bangladesh’s batting lineup, finishing with 5/53 in 10 overs.
Axar Patel – 7.5/10
Axar’s contribution with the ball was more valuable than his batting. He nearly secured a hat-trick but missed out due to Rohit Sharma’s dropped catch in the slips. He ended with figures of 2/43 from nine overs. However, he only managed eight runs with the bat.
Harshit Rana – 7.5/10
Rana continued his good form, picking up three wickets and conceding just 31 runs in 7.4 overs. He complemented Shami well.
KL Rahul – 7/10
Rahul proved why he remains India’s first-choice wicketkeeper and No. 6 batter. Behind the stumps, he was sharp, taking a brilliant catch off Axar Patel to dismiss Tanzid Hasan. He scored 41 runs and sealed the win with a six.
Rohit Sharma – 6.5/10
The Indian captain had a steady performance, leading the team well with his decisions on the field. His move to introduce Axar Patel in the ninth over almost resulted in a hat-trick, and his management of Shami and Rana was spot on. With the bat, he scored 41 runs off 36 balls, showing glimpses of his aggressive style before getting out.
Ravindra Jadeja – 5/10
Jadeja also went wicketless, finishing with figures of 0/37 from nine overs.
Hardik Pandya – 4.5/10
Pandya had a quiet game, going wicketless in his four overs while conceding 20 runs.
Kuldeep Yadav – 4.5/10
Kuldeep struggled to make an impact, failing to take a wicket. He bowled 10 overs, conceding 43 runs. India will hope he finds form in the upcoming games against Pakistan and New Zealand.
Virat Kohli – 4/10
Kohli’s struggles continued as he managed only 22 runs off 38 balls, striking at 57.89. Though he showed signs of returning to form in the ODI series against England, he hasn’t quite clicked yet. With key matches ahead against Pakistan and New Zealand, he needs to step up to avoid putting extra pressure on the middle order.
Shreyas Iyer – 4/10
Iyer had a disappointing outing, scoring just 15 runs before being caught by Bangladesh skipper Shanto off Mustafizur Rahman’s bowling.
For India to take home the ICC trophy this year, the entire team needs to step up, but thankfully, there is still time for that. Right now, getting off to a strong start in the tournament in Dubai is what matters most. Next up will be Pakistan on Sunday.
