The New Zealand cricket team has been dealt a severe setback ahead of the home ODI series against India. The left-hand middle-order duo of Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman have been ruled out of the entire ODI series as they battle fitness concerns sustained earlier in the season. Both players have been struggling with injuries, and despite rigorous rehabilitation efforts, they failed to recover in time to feature in the India vs New Zealand ODIs comprising 5 matches.

Both Rachin and Mark were in the thick of things for the T20I series. They were slated to feature in the T20I series but couldn’t make it to the squad due to injuries. Star all-rounder Rachin Ravindra suffered a right shoulder dislocation while attempting a diving catch during a promotional advertisement shoot ahead of the T20I series.
Although initial projections had targeted a return for the ODI leg, his rehabilitation timeline required a more cautious approach to ensure long-term fitness ahead of crucial upcoming 2-match Test commitments against India, which follow the ODI series.
Similarly, middle-order batter Mark Chapman has been sidelined due to a lingering left hamstring tear. Chapman originally suffered the injury while featuring in the inaugural European T20 franchise league. While initial medical updates suggested a swift recovery window aimed at the ODI window, his inability to attain peak match fitness has forced team selectors to leave him out of the active playing roster.
New Zealand’s head coach Rob Walter has his say on the injuries of the two batters ahead of the crucial ODI series.
“I caught up with Mark last week and although he’s disappointed he’s working hard to get back on the field. With Rachin, his shoulder hasn’t quite recovered to a position where he could field comfortably in white-ball cricket, so with the Test series later this month we don’t want to take any undue risks. Everyone knows what an asset Mark and Rachin are to this side so it’s a shame they have to miss this series.” Walter was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
The New Zealand selectors have announced two different squads ahead of the 5-match ODI series. The squads are segregated for the first three games and for the remaining two India vs New Zealand ODIs.
Squad for ODIs 1-3: Mitchell Santner (cC), Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Matt Fisher, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham (WK), Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Glenn Phillips, Tim Seifert, Nathan Smith, Will Young, Blair Tickner.
Squad for ODIs 4-5: Mitchell Santner (C), Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Kristian Clarke, Jacob Duffy, Matt Fisher, Dean Foxcroft, Lockie Ferguson, Mitchell Hay (WK), Nick Kelly, Tim Seifert (WK), Blair Tickner, Will Young.
Considering a crucial 2-match Test series to follow right after the India vs New Zealand ODIs, the selection committee has given some of the Test specialists a breather before the Test series, which will kick off on November 19 at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, followed by the final Test slated to take place at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on November 27.
