Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan recently weighed in on the dominance in sports his nation once had and how that quality is severely lacking in the modern days.

The former World Cup-winning captain explained that it was the economy in general which resonated with everything that happened around sports or infra that assisted the Pakistani’s in making progress.

Pakistan in the ’60s

In 60s, Pakistan was shining and it was like an Asian role model. I grew up with that hope but we let ourselves down because unfortunately democracy couldn’t get grounded in Pakistan. When democracy faltered, the army came in

Khan said at a breakfast session on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum 2020 in Davos, Switzerland.

Imran Khan also spoke about how Pakistan used to be a hard team to beat even against the likes of India who are now dominating in the field of hockey and cricket when it comes to subcontinent challenge.

On the dominance back in the day

When I was playing cricket, India was seven times our size but we regularly quashed them. In hockey and so many other games also. We were great, he said.

Khan also mentioned that the win thing which he learned in his initial days of playing cricket is that winning must always be the priority as “there is no sympathy for the losers”.

However, the table seems to have turned in recent times as it is India that has largely dominated in cricket, hockey and other sports, especially when put into contention with the rest of the subcontinent nations.

With Imran Khan now in charge, there is a possibility that sports in Pakistan may once again look to inspire the people around the world.
