Chennai Super Kings have finally got their mojo back after two wins in a row. Both those wins came at home, and now they travel to Hyderabad to take on the 2016 champions at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on April 18. With the team gelling well, the question on every cricket fan’s mind ahead of the IPL 2026 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) is whether MS Dhoni will take the field. The legendary CSK wicketkeeper, who has been sidelined with a calf strain, has now traveled with the team to Hyderabad, sparking widespread speculation about his availability.

MS Dhoni’s Injury and Absence

Dhoni has missed CSK’s opening five matches this season due to a calf injury sustained during pre-season training. His absence has been felt both on and off the field. While CSK managed to bounce back with two wins after a poor start, the lack of Dhoni’s tactical presence and finishing ability has been evident. He did not travel for earlier away fixtures in Guwahati and Bengaluru, nor was he seen at Chepauk during match days, further fueling concerns about his fitness.

Ahead of CSK’s home fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders, Dhoni was spotted having a short net session, facing throwdowns but avoiding full-fledged batting drills. This suggested he was gradually working his way back to match readiness. His decision to travel with the squad to Hyderabad marks a significant step forward in his recovery process.

This is the first time in IPL 2026 that Dhoni has joined CSK for an away game. His presence at Hyderabad airport created a frenzy among fans, with chants of “Dhoni, Dhoni” echoing as he boarded the team bus. While CSK has not officially confirmed his inclusion in the playing XI, travelling with the squad strongly indicates that he is close to returning.

CSK’s Season Without Dhoni

CSK began the season with three consecutive defeats, raising doubts about their campaign. Under stand-in leadership, they managed to secure two wins in their last two matches, but the team still lacks the composure and tactical sharpness Dhoni brings. His return could provide a morale boost, stabilize the batting order, and sharpen CSK’s decision-making in crunch moments.

If Dhoni is declared fit, he may not take on a heavy workload immediately. CSK could use him in a lower-order role, allowing him to finish innings without putting excessive strain on his calf. His leadership, however, will be invaluable, especially against SRH, who have looked strong at home. Even if he doesn’t play, his presence in the dugout is expected to lift the team’s confidence.

What next for CSK?

With two wins in the last two games, CSK’s next challenge is against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, who themselves are heading into this contest on the back of taming the high-flying Rajasthan Royals. After the SRH game, the Super Kings will travel to Mumbai to take on their fellow five-time champions, the Mumbai Indians, before returning home to host the 2022 champions Gujarat Titans.

The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side has won both their games so far this season at home. Their next challenge now is winning fixtures away from home. They are all set to play two away games against two former champions and would be hoping to do well in both those fixtures before heading home.
