Reigning IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru have received a major boost from the BCCI’s apex council. All the clouds looming over the uncertainty of M. Chinnaswamy Stadium hosting RCB matches for the IPL 2026 have been banished. The franchise is set to play as many as 5 of their home games at their beloved venue, and the remaining two home games will be staged at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur.

IPL 2026: M Chinnaswamy to host the opening and final game

This confirmation carries immense significance, not just for RCB fans but for the city of Bengaluru itself. However, the venue had been under a cloud since the tragic events of June 4, 2025, when a stampede during RCB’s victory parade outside the stadium claimed 11 lives. The incident forced authorities to suspend cricketing activities at the ground, with even Women’s World Cup fixtures being relocated.

The fallout from that tragedy prompted a comprehensive review of crowd safety and event preparedness. A high-level inquiry was launched, leading to the constitution of the Justice John Michael D’Cunha Committee. Its recommendations became central to any attempt to restore cricket at the stadium. The committee emphasized stricter crowd management protocols, enhanced emergency response systems, and infrastructural upgrades to ensure that such an incident would never be repeated.

RCB’s management expressed relief and optimism at the stadium’s reinstatement.

“Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will play five of their home games in IPL 2026 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru,” the franchise confirmed in its official statement.

For fans, this is a moment of emotional reconnection. The Chinnaswamy has always been synonymous with RCB’s identity, hosting countless memorable matches, from Chris Gayle’s record-breaking innings to Virat Kohli’s masterclasses. Fans have every reason to rejoice, as the rule of IPL suggests that the defending champions’ home ground will host the following edition’s opening and final game. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium will be hosting both those games, along with one of the playoff games.

From a cricketing perspective, the Chinnaswamy Stadium offers RCB a distinct advantage. The ground’s shorter boundaries and batting-friendly pitch have historically favored aggressive stroke play, aligning perfectly with RCB’s attacking brand of cricket. With stars like Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, and Virat Kohli in their ranks, the team will look to capitalize on home conditions to build momentum in their title defense.

At the same time, the decision to allocate two home games to Raipur reflects the franchise’s intent to expand its fan base beyond Bengaluru. The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium has previously hosted IPL matches and is known for its enthusiastic crowds. By splitting home fixtures, RCB not only ensures logistical flexibility but also strengthens its presence in central India.

Speaking on the development, RCB CEO Rajesh Menon added,

“The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is more than just our home ground it is where our identity as a team truly comes alive. The energy our fans bring to Bengaluru has always been a driving force for our players, inspiring them through every phase of the game. Our fans have stood by us unconditionally, and they deserve the opportunity to watch their team compete at home.”

“After detailed discussions and completing the necessary due process around permissions, we are pleased to confirm that RCB will play five matches in Bengaluru. We sincerely thank the Government of Karnataka, the KSCA, and the Karnataka Police for their support in making this possible.”

What’s ahead for RCB in IPL 2026?

The team opted to stick with the core of their squad from the last season. It was somehow on the cards, as no team would want to tinker with a squad that earned them a title. They opted for eight new signings in the mini auction ahead of this season, with their costliest buy being Madhya Pradesh all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer for 7 crore.
