The 5-time champions, Mumbai Indians, will enter their clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur on May 10 with one of their key players missing. With regular skipper Hardik Pandya recovering from a back spasm and seemingly available for the match, MI’s vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav is now a doubtful starter for match 54 of the Tata IPL 2026.

Suryakumar Yadav to miss the MI vs RCB game

In the latest development surrounding Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian T20 skipper and MI’s vice-captain, is expecting his first child with wife Devisha Shetty and may not be available for the game against the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 10 in Raipur. However, Hardik recovering from a back spasm is good news for the five-time champions, who have to mull over Suryakumar’s absence in this crucial encounter. Talking about Surya’s replacement in the eleven, either wicket-keeper batter Robin Minz or batting all-rounder Mayank Rawat could step into the eleven for MI’s vice-captain.

How Mumbai has fared so far under Hardik Pandya’s and Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership

The five-time champions, Mumbai Indians, have had quite a torrid time in this season of the Tata IPL. Having played 10 games so far this season, the former champs have registered only 3 wins and succumbed to as many as 7 losses. In those 10 games, Hardik led the side in eight games and managed two wins that came against the three-time champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, by 6 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, and defeated the 2022 champions, Gujarat Titans, in their own backyard, i.e., in Ahmedabad, by a gigantic margin of 99 runs.

Suryakumar Yadav has led the Mumbai Indians in Hardik’s absence. The regular skipper didn’t feature in MI’s second game of the season against the Delhi Capitals due to illness at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. MI went down against DC by 8 wickets in that game. Surya once again led the Mumbai Indians in their previous game played at home against the Lucknow Super Giants. It was a low-scoring game that saw Mumbai chasing down their highest IPL total in the history of the tournament with 8 balls and 6 wickets to spare. MI chased down LSG’s 228 courtesy of Ryan Rickelton’s and Rohit Sharma’s blistering knocks. The openers scored 83 off 32 and 84 off 44, respectively, to script history for the Mumbai Indians.

Can the Mumbai Indians still make it to the playoffs?

First things first, the Mumbai Indians are now left with four more games, and they need to win all of them to reach 14 points. While 14 points doesn’t provide an absolute guarantee, any loss from this point forward would essentially result in their elimination.

The primary objective for MI is to overtake at least one team currently sitting in the top four. Since Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have played fewer matches, MI’s most realistic targets for displacement are Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) or Rajasthan Royals (RR), who currently sit at the top and fourth spot, respectively.

MI’s Remaining Fixtures

Take a close look at Mumbai Indians’ remaining four fixtures of the Tata IPL 2026.

  • vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Raipur on May 10
  • vs Punjab Kings at Dharamsala on May 14
  • vs Kolkata Knight Riders at Kolkata on May 20
  • vs Rajasthan Royals at Mumbai on May 24

Ideal Scenarios for MI

For the simplest qualification path. MI needs the following results from other fixtures:

  • Dominance from PBKS and RCB: These two teams should win all their remaining games (except when facing MI) to suppress the point totals of other competitors.
  • The Slump of SRH and RR: If both Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals ideally lose all their upcoming matches.
  • The Rise of Gujarat Titans: GT needs to win their remaining fixtures against SRH, RR, KKR, and CSK to keep those teams from advancing.
  • Bottom-Half Neutralization: In games between teams in the lower half of the standings, MI benefits most when the lower-ranked side wins. This prevents any single team from breaking away and challenging MI’s position.
