Ahead of the start of IPL 2026, the Delhi Capitals have been dealt a significant blow with English opener Ben Duckett withdrawing from the league at the very last moment. Duckett, who was bought by the Capitals at his base price, i.e., INR 2 crore, refused to join the squad to prioritize his England career. With this withdrawal, Duckett has ruled himself out of IPL 2026 and is set to face a two‑auction ban that sidelines him from IPL 2027 and 2028.

While Duckett’s absence leaves a void in the squad for an overseas player, Delhi Capitals still have options to explore, especially with Pathum Nissanka already in the squad as an overseas opener. As per IPL rules, any franchise can opt for an injury replacement only from the pool of players who have registered their names in the subsequent auctions. The franchise will now look at suitable replacements for the left-hander who can bring spark to DC’s already settled batting line up.
The first name on the list is Duckett’s countryman Jamie Smith. A right-hand explosive batter who keeps wickets has never featured in the tournament and remained unsold in the IPL 2026 auctions. Although Smith wasn’t in England’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad, his recent performances in domestic cricket have showcased his potential to dominate in the shortest format. Smith’s fearless approach could complement Delhi’s batting unit, providing them with a dynamic option at the top.

Another Englishman who can take Duckett’s place in Delhi Capitals is the veteran right-hand batter, Jonny Bairstow. Jonny is perhaps the most reliable option in this list, bringing a wealth of international and IPL experience. The 36-year-old has played for various franchises in the past, namely Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, and most recently Mumbai Indians, for whom he played last season as a replacement player in the playoffs. What makes Bairstow an asset for DC is his ability to bat at any position, making him the most versatile candidate among the three. With age not being his friend lately, if Bairstow gets picked by DC, this could be his last dance in the IPL.

The final name on this list is Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Though unsold in the IPL 2026 auctions, Gurbaz remains a strong contender. The Afghan wicketkeeper‑batter is known for his explosive batting at the top of the order. Importantly, he isn’t unfamiliar with the Capitals’ setup, having represented Dubai Capitals (Delhi’s sister franchise) in the ILT20 in the past. His aggressive style could give Delhi the quick starts they need, and his prior association with the franchise adds weightage to his appeal.

Duckett’s withdrawal is undoubtedly a setback, but Delhi Capitals have viable alternatives. Jamie Smith offers youthful exuberance; Jonny Bairstow provides proven experience and versatility, while Rahmanullah Gurbaz brings explosive power and franchise familiarity. The official confirmation is awaited from the Capitals, but we will find out soon who replaces Ben Duckett in DC’s squad for IPL 2026.
