Hardik Pandya and Mumbai Indians’ relationship, particularly after the 2022 edition of the IPL, has always been one of the most scrutinized narratives. However, following MI’s official elimination from the IPL 2026 playoff race on May 10 after a nervy defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, that scrutiny reached a fever pitch. A brief but explosive social media incident has left fans and analysts asking: Is the captaincy experiment over, and is Hardik Pandya headed for the exit or a possible trade next season?

Hardik Pandya Unfollows and Follows MI on Instagram

The rumors began to take center stage immediately after MI’s 2-wicket loss to defending champions RCB in Raipur on Sunday night. The defeat confirmed that the five-time champions would not be progressing to the playoffs; eagle-eyed fans noticed a startling change on Hardik’s Instagram profile. The MI skipper, who has missed his team’s last two games due to a back spasm, reportedly unfollowed the Mumbai Indians’ official Instagram handle.

For a brief window, Hardik’s “following” count dropped from 151 to 150, and the Mumbai Indians’ official account was missing from his list. In the age of social media frenzy, a name like Hardik Pandya can never evade the Gen Z eyes, and soon after this happened, rumors of a “major fallout” started trending.

The fuss, however, took a turn when, minutes later, Hardik’s following count was restored to 151, with MI reappearing in his followed accounts list. While many dismissed it as a technical glitch or an accidental click, others interpreted it as a “moment of heat” that was quickly walked back by PR intervention.

MI and Hardik Pandya in a paradox?

It hasn’t been a season to remember for the 5-time champions Mumbai Indians. They have failed to make it to the playoffs this season and became the second team to get eliminated from the tournament. The team has had a torrid time this season, but is this something new with this franchise? Perhaps not. In the past, as well as most recently in 2024, the Mumbai Indians finished the season at the bottom under Hardik Pandya’s leadership. In that season, MI traded Hardik Pandya from the Gujarat Titans, a team the all-rounder led to their inaugural and only IPL glory in the 2022 edition.

Since his high-profile return and appointment as captain, replacing the legendary Rohit Sharma, Hardik has faced an uphill battle for acceptance. The MI fans have remained divided, with boos often greeting the captain at various venues.

When MI produced one of their best performances of this season against LSG under Suryakumar’s leadership without Hardik (where Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton both struck match-winning 80s), the narrative shifted from “Hardik is the leader” to “Does MI actually need Hardik?”

The “unfollow drama” also didn’t happen in a vacuum. It is the culmination of a difficult IPL 2026 campaign for both the team and the leader.

  • The Team Performance: Mumbai Indians have been eliminated from the playoff race with only six points from 11 matches. Their lack of consistency with both bat and ball has been a recurring theme, leading to their earliest exit in recent memory.
  • The Captain’s Form: Hardik’s individual statistics have mirrored the team’s decline. In his eight appearances this season, he has managed only 146 runs and a mere four wickets. Without a single half-century to his name, questions about his impact as a premier all-rounder have grown louder.
  • Injury Woes: Reliability has been another hurdle. Hardik missed crucial games against Lucknow Super Giants and the recent knockout blow against RCB due to persistent back spasms. In his absence, Suryakumar Yadav took the reins, leading to a noticeable shift in team energy that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the fanbase.

Is Hardik Pandya “done” with MI? Technically, he remains the captain under contract, and the “unfollow” appears to have been a temporary blip. However, things could change drastically next season, as a possible trade could be on the minds of the MI team management after two lackluster seasons under the all-rounder’s leadership. If the shift happens, which team do you think will be best suited with Hardik Pandya in it?
