In a significant boost for the 5-time champions Mumbai Indians, their star English all-rounder Will Jacks has arrived in India and has linked up with the squad at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Englishman will be available for MI’s high-voltage clash against their arch-rivals and fellow 5-time champions Chennai Super Kings.

The 27-year-old’s arrival comes as a sigh of relief for the five-time champions, who have navigated the first six games of the 2026 season without one of their most versatile overseas assets and have lost four of them.

Will Jacks, the T20 Talisman

Will Jacks’ absence during the early stages of the tournament was a calculated decision by the player and the franchise. Following a grueling international calendar that included four of England’s five Tests during The Ashes, a white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, and a standout performance in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Jacks requested a brief period of rest.

His form leading into the IPL has been nothing short of spectacular. During the recent T20 World Cup held in India and Sri Lanka, Jacks was England’s premier match-winner, equalling the record for the most Player of the Match awards (4) in a single edition. He finished the tournament with 226 runs at a strike rate exceeding 175 and picked up 9 wickets, helping England reach the semifinals.

MI fans, who have been flooding social media with “Where is Jacks?” queries for weeks, finally received confirmation of his return via the team’s official handles with the caption: “Bas! No more ‘Where is?’ comments!”

A Tactical Solution for MI’s Top Order

Mumbai Indians currently sit seventh in the standings, having recently snapped a demoralizing four-match losing streak with a massive 99-run victory over the Gujarat Titans. While Tilak Varma’s stunning century (101* off 45 balls) in that game provided a blueprint for MI’s batting might, the team has lacked a consistent overseas anchor-finisher.

Jacks brings a unique tactical flexibility to the XI:

  • Top-Order Explosion: He can open the innings or bat at number three if the team wants to maximize the Powerplay.
  • Spin-Bowling Utility: His off-spin is more than just a part-time option. With MI already utilizing Mitchell Santner and Allah Ghazanfar, Jacks adds a third spin dimension that could be lethal on a Wankhede pitch that occasionally offers grip.

“Will brings that fearless English brand of cricket that fits perfectly with our philosophy,” an MI team official stated during the practice session. “He’s coming off a peak international run, and having that confidence in the dressing room before a CSK game is invaluable.”

Whom is Jacks going to replace?

This is Jacks’ second season with the Mumbai Indians. In 2025, he was a reliable performer, scoring 233 runs and taking 6 wickets in 13 matches. Having been retained for INR 5.25 crore, the expectations are significantly higher this year.

Will Jacks’ return is a massive boost for the Mumbai Indians, but at the same time, it gives the team management a headache of whom he is going to replace in the eleven. The obvious choice could be Sherfane Rutherford, but the West Indian has shone in the limited opportunities he has had this season.

So if not Sherfane, Blackcaps white-ball skipper Mitchell Santner could face the axe. Santner hasn’t been impressive either with the ball or with the bat so far this season. With Jacks capable of bowling his offies, he could well be in for Santner in this game.

MI vs CSK: The Wankhede Showdown

The clash against Chennai Super Kings is always the most-watched fixture of the season, but the 2026 edition carries extra weight. CSK currently sits just below MI in eighth place, making this a “four-pointer” game where the winner gains significant momentum for a top-four push.

With Jasprit Bumrah recently finding his first wicket of the season and the domestic pace attack spearheaded by Ashwani Kumar showing teeth, the addition of Jacks makes Mumbai look like a much more balanced unit on paper.

As the Wankhede prepares to turn into a sea of blue on Thursday, the presence of Will Jacks in the dugout—or more likely, the starting XI—gives Mumbai the “X-factor” they have missed. For CSK, the scouting report just got a lot more complicated.

Mumbai Indians’ Upcoming Fixtures:

  • vs Chennai Super Kings (April 23, Mumbai)
  • vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (April 29, Mumbai)
  • vs Mumbai Indians (May 2, Chennai)
