Mumbai Indians fans, you might have to wait a little longer to see Jasprit Bumrah in action. The star pacer is still recovering from a back injury and is expected to miss the first few games of IPL 2025. He has been out since January, and his return depends on clearance from BCCI’s medical team in Bengaluru.
Bumrah picked up a stress-related back injury during the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney on January 4. Since then, he has been undergoing rehabilitation. He was initially included in India’s provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, but after fresh scans in February, he was ruled out as he still wasn’t fully fit.
BCCI’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, mentioned that Bumrah needed at least five weeks of rest after the Sydney Test. Even after that, he continued to feel discomfort, which delayed his recovery. This is the first time he has faced a back injury since his surgery in March 2023.
Mumbai Indians have three games in March, and Bumrah is unlikely to play in any of them. Their season kicks off with a big clash against Chennai Super Kings on March 23, followed by Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on March 29. The team will return to Wankhede for their first home game against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 31.
If all goes well, he might be ready for the match against Lucknow Super Giants on April 4 or Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 7. But there’s no confirmed date for his return yet.
Losing Bumrah at the start of the season is a big blow for MI. He is their key bowler in both the powerplay and death overs, and his absence will leave a gap in the bowling attack. Now, the pressure will be on Jofra Archer, Gerald Coetzee, and Jason Behrendorff to step up.
If you’re playing fantasy cricket, keep in mind that Bumrah won’t be available for the first few matches. So, you might want to look at other Mumbai Indians bowlers like Jofra Archer or Jason Behrendorff. Also, spinners like Piyush Chawla and all-rounders like Hardik Pandya could take on a bigger role in the bowling attack.
