This means that English opening batsman Jason Roy will be warming the bench. He came in the Kolkata Knight Riders squad as a replacement player for all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan who pulled out from IPL 2023 due to personal reasons. Roy has already joined the Kolkata Knight Riders camp and was available for selection but the team management has decided to back Afghanistan opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz at the top.
