India are well on top after the second day’s play at Adelaide Oval. After a lower order collapse in the morning, Indian bowlers executed their plans perfectly as a unit to keep the hosts well below their first innings total. But still there is plenty of room for improvements if you are in the Indian dressing room.
After getting dismissed on second ball of the match yesterday, Prithvi Shaw was castled in almost identical manner late on day 2 by Pat Cummins. But even before that in the field today, he made a mistake which cost India some useful runs.
After dismissing both Australian openers cheaply, India were hunting the big boys. As expected before the series, there was a lot of dependence on Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith to perfom for Australia. Jasprit Bumrah created a chance straight after the first break when Marnus Labuschagne tried to pull one of his deliveries. But he couldn’t control the shot and ball ballooned up to the square-leg fielder. Prithvi Shaw fielding there just couldn’t hold on to that as his balance was all over the place. Naturally, captain Virat Kohli was not happy with his effort and gave some hard words to the youngster.
Although India are in a strong position right now in the match but they have to thank their bowlers for that. Indian fielding today spilled as many as 7 chances and things would have been even better for them had those were taken. India ended the day with a lead of 62 runs and nine wickets in hand in their second innings. After India’s 244 runs in the first innings, Australia were only restricted to 191 in their first attempt. Captain Tim Paine top scored for the hosts with an unbeaten knock of 73 runs.
