The coronavirus outbreak is getting worse as days go by and with that the possibility of the Indian Premier League (IPL) taking place diminishes even more. With more number of people getting infected by the virus, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) could invoke the ‘Force Majeure’ clause with the official broadcasters of the mega event on the 2020 media rights contract.

The original date for the start of the tournament was May 29, 2020. But due to the ongoing conditions, the governing body was forced to move it away to April 15, 2020. But it’s now certain that the tournament will be pushed further back until any further notice.

BCCI to claim the ‘Force Majeure’ clause

According to sources, the BCCI has issued a letter to the official broadcaster about the ‘Force Majeure’ clause if the new season of the IPL gets further delayed or suspended. The ‘Force Majeure’ comes in use during a course of a natural disaster such as an earthquake, flood etc. However, over here, the BCCI has put into use the clause amidst the COVID-19 outbreak. As it stands, things look bleak for the IPL anytime soon this year. That is the reason why the BCCI has issued the clause to protect their selves and comply with the contractual obligations.

As per reports, the BCCI officials didn’t have intentions of coming on record to make a comment on the situation. They’ve also come to notice that the same letters are being sent to other contractual parties and commercial sponsors in order to be protected. The BCCI is also likely to invoke the ‘Force Majeure’ clause with sponsors which also include its title sponsor VIVO. That being said, the BCCI will be desperate for normalcy to return.
