The former 5-time champions, Mumbai Indians, will be out to claim their sixth IPL title in the upcoming season of Tata IPL. Having last won the title in 2020, it’s been 6 long years since one of the most decorated franchises in IPL history has laid its hands on the prestigious title. The franchise headed into the IPL 2026 auctions with one clear objective, i.e., having backups for their key players. The think tank did the exact same in the auctions, and now it is time to deliver.
Having last won the IPL in 2020, a team like Mumbai Indians will be desperate to increase the count in their trophy cabinet. Having one of the most decorated and experienced Indian lineups in the form of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma, there’s no shortage of experience and match-winners in the squad. MI just needs proper execution, something they have been missing for the last 6 years or so. Last Season’s Finish: Finished 4th in the group stage but managed to win the eliminator before losing the second qualifier.
Quinton de Kock was one of the players on MI’s radar who went into the auction with the minimum purse. Buying him for a base price of INR 1 crore was a great escape from the 5-time champions. With de Kock back in MI colors, he will be back at the top for the side opening the innings alongside MI’s former skipper Rohit Sharma.
Talking about Rohit, although he is no longer active in T20Is, Rohit remains a vital cog in the Mumbai Indians’ setup. His form will be monitored closely by the franchise, and they will be hoping their senior and most experienced batter delivers with precision in this edition of the Tata IPL.
Tilak Varma has grown in stature in the last year or so. Playing for Team India in the shortest format of the game has made him a much-improved batter in recent times. His composure under pressure and ability to rotate strike make him a perfect No. 3. Tilak’s consistency ensures MI’s middle order doesn’t collapse even if early wickets fall.
The Indian T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav didn’t have a great showing in the T20 World Cup 2026 with the bat. Although Team India won their record third T20 World Cup under Surya’s captaincy, his personal form wasn’t worth discussing. Entering a new season of the Tata IPL, Surya would want to kill the demons from the T20 World Cup 2026 and play a vital role for his side to help them win their record 6th IPL title.
Naman Dhir, the promising youngster, adds freshness to the lineup. His fearless approach and ability to clear boundaries make him a valuable addition. MI will hope Dhir can replicate his domestic performances and provide depth in the batting order.
Hardik Pandya, the captain, is the heartbeat of MI. His explosive batting, combined with his ability to bowl crucial overs both with the new ball and at the death, makes him a complete package. Hardik’s leadership, meanwhile, will be under the scanner, particularly with the franchise failing to reach the playoffs only once in his tenure as captain in the last two editions.
Will Jacks, the English all‑rounder, adds versatility. His aggressive batting style and ability to chip in with off‑spin provide MI with flexibility. Will’s inclusion ensures MI has depth in both departments. After a terrific T20 World Cup with both bat and ball, Jacks would be hoping to replicate the same form in this IPL season.
Deepak Chahar, known for his swing bowling, will be crucial in the powerplay. His ability to strike early and dismantle top orders makes him a valuable asset. Bowling with the new ball is his forte, and we often see captains making him bowl three overs in the powerplay and one during the middle overs.
Trent Boult, the left‑arm pacer, is back in MI colors after 5 long years. 2021 was the last time Trent featured for MI, and he is back now to form a potent new-ball duo with another swing bowler, Deepak Chahar. Trent adds variety and experience; his knack for picking wickets with the new ball and delivering at the death makes him indispensable. Boult’s partnership with Bumrah has been one of MI’s biggest strengths over the years, and the duo will be back at it again, bowling in the death.
Jasprit Bumrah, the spearhead of MI’s attack, remains their most lethal weapon. His yorkers, slower balls, and ability to deliver under pressure make him the best all-format bowler in the world currently. Bumrah’s presence ensures MI always have control in crunch situations, especially at the death.
Mitchell Santner, the New Zealand white-ball skipper, brings control and experience. His ability to bowl economical spells and contribute with the bat makes him a reliable option. Santner will be leading MI’s inexperienced spin attack, and he could come in handy with the bat as well, batting lower down the order.
Shardul Thakur, traded in from LSG, provides MI with an additional seam‑bowling option. His knack for picking wickets and contributing with the bat makes him a handy impact sub. Alternatively, Mayank Markande offers a spin option. His leg spin and wicket‑taking ability in the middle overs give MI flexibility depending on match conditions. Markande could be an able ally of Mitchell Santner in the spin bowling department if MI opts for two frontline spin options on surfaces that assist spin.
