The stage is set for a blockbuster clash at the scenic HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala as defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) take on the highly consistent 2022 champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2026. While the primary objective remains a direct ticket to the grand finale in Ahmedabad, the biggest pre-match talking point has centered heavily around the fitness and availability of RCB’s explosive English opener, Phil Salt.

Salt has been out of action for over a month, leaving a massive void at the top of the order alongside Virat Kohli. Providing a comprehensive update on the eve of the game, RCB skipper Rajat Patidar gave fans a mix of optimism and tactical caution.

‘He is Under Observation’ — Rajat Patidar provides Update on Phil Salt

Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Monday, Rajat Patidar confirmed that Phil Salt has successfully recovered from his injury but stopped short of guaranteeing his place in the starting eleven for tonight’s game.

“Salt is fit, he is under observation from the doctor. He has been participating in a few drills, but we haven’t decided yet on our playing XI. We will look at the wicket and then we will decide.”

Salt’s unfortunate layoff dates back to April 18, 2026, when he suffered a serious left ring-finger injury while fielding against the Delhi Capitals. The severity of the damage required him to fly back to the United Kingdom for specialist treatment and scans, forcing him to miss eight consecutive league matches.

Before the injury, the English wicketkeeper-batsman was in blistering form, hammering 202 runs across six matches at an exceptional strike rate of over 168, including two critical half-centuries. While he has rejoined the squad in Dharamshala and resumed light training drills, the team management is keeping their cards close to their chest, assessing both his match-readiness and the nature of the Dharamshala surface before taking a final call.

How RCB Spanned Without Phil Salt This Season

Losing a premium explosive opener mid-season could derail any team, but the defending champions managed to patch their top order together through sheer versatility and squad depth.

  • The Jacob Bethell Experiment: Initially, RCB turned to another young English talent, Jacob Bethell, to fill Salt’s shoes. Bethell showed flashes of brilliance and provided decent stability, but his run came to an abrupt end when he also suffered a finger injury, forcing him to fly back home and leaving RCB scrambling for options once again.
  • The Venkatesh Iyer Masterstroke: With both English options ruled out, RCB handed the opening responsibility to Venkatesh Iyer. The move paid rich dividends. Iyer adapted seamlessly, proving his immense value in RCB’s final league fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad by blasting a rapid 19-ball 44. Iyer’s flexibility, having also scored an unbeaten 73 batting at number four earlier in the season against PBKS, helped RCB finish at the absolute top of the table with 18 points.

The Selection Headache and Possible Playing XI

Salt’s return creates a major, albeit positive, selection headache for Patidar and the team management. If the Dharamshala pitch promises true pace and bounce, Salt’s high-intent powerplay game could be preferred to counter GT’s dangerous new-ball pairing of Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj.

Should Salt return to the lineup tonight, Venkatesh Iyer should not be dropped; instead, he is expected to slide down into the middle order, where he has previously excelled in the game against the Punjab Kings at Dharamsala. This adjustment would provide incredible depth to RCB’s batting unit. Suyash Sharma, whose services won’t be required in the seam-friendly conditions of Dharamsala, might sit out for the returning Salt.
