Shreyas Iyer ruled out SL vs IND

Shreyas Iyer Ruled Out of SL vs IND series: Team India has been dealt with a massive setback as Shreyas Iyer is very much unlikely to recover in time for the upcoming white-ball series in Sri Lanka. Iyer underwent a shoulder surgery after subluxating his left shoulder during the ODI series against England at home and he was also forced to miss the first half of IPL 2021 due to the same issue. In the absence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma due to their involvement in the WTC final and England Test series, Shreyas Iyer was touted as the prime contender for the India captaincy role against Sri Lanka.

Shreyas Iyer underwent a shoulder surgery on April 8 and it is expected that it will take him atleast three months to completely recover from the injury. If reports are to be believed, the Mumbai batsman has already been ruled out for the upcoming three ODIs and three T20Is against Sri Lanka scheduled in July. The BCCI’s medical team will now target to keep Shreyas Iyer injury-free for the all-important T20 World Cup scheduled later this year in October.

“Normally, a surgery of this scale along with rest, extensive rehab and training to get back in shape takes around four months. In case Shreyas was available, he would have been the automatic choice for captaincy,” said a senior BCCI source in a conversation with PTI.

As per the recent reports, one of Shikhar Dhawan or Hardik Pandya are very much likely to be appointed as the Team India captain for the white-ball series against Sri Lanka. Both these players have done amazingly well for the national team in the recent few months, however, going by the seniority scenario, Dhawan is likely to beat Pandya for the captaincy role due to the former’s international cricket experience. India’s tour of Sri Lanka will start with the first ODI scheduled on 13th July while the T20I series will start from July 22.
