By Chaitanya Laxman

A strong batting by all departments allowed Sunrisers Hyderabad to defeat Kings XI Punjab in a crucial encounter in the Indian Premier League 2019 and also pushed them ahead in the race to the play-offs.

Warner guides SRH to 212

Batting first, SRH once again tinkered with their batting line-up and brought Wriddhiman Saha to open the innings with David Warner. The ploy worked as Saha scored a quickfire 28 runs off 13 balls and added 78 runs in just 6.2 over for the first wicket.

Meanwhile Warner produced another fifty, his ninth 50 plus score in 12 innings this season and hammered 81 runs off 56 balls. Manish Pandey scored 36 off 25 balls to keep the momentum with SRH.

Ashwin dismissed Warner in the 16th over and the Mohammad Shami claimed two wickets in three balls to restrict the damage in the death overs.

SRH finished with 212 runs courtesy of a late cameo from Mohammad Nabi of 20 runs off 10 balls.

Khaleel, Rashid blow apart Punjab

Chasing 213 runs, KXIP was heavily dependent on their openers but Khaleel Ahmed removed Chris Gayle in the third over to dent Punjab’s chances. Mayank Agarwal played well for his 27 off 18 balls but fell against Rashid Khan in the 9th over.

Khaleel then came back in the 11th over to dismiss Nicolas Pooran who was looking dangerous with 21 off 10 balls. Rashid Khan removed David Miller and R Ashwin on successive delivers and Punjab’s chase was derailed significantly.

Punjab managed 167 runs in their 20 overs and fell short of 45 runs, a margin which will take a toll on their net run rate.
