Sri Lanka series is Make-or-Break for Indian cricketer

Team India is all set to get started in the year of 2020. Their first assignment will be three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.  The series will be crucial for the team management to make their minds on some of the spots available for discussion for the upcoming T20 World Cup. One of them is Shikhar Dhawan.

Not fitting in T20 template

After the last T20 against West Indies, Virat Kohli highlighted the roadmap to the T20 world cup. He wanted the team to go for all-out attack right from the first ball. Shikhar Dhawan might not be suitable for that style of play since he tends to take time before loading his guns. On the other side, KL Rahul is perfectly fitting into the role of taking the pressure off Rohit and giving the team a perfect power-play start.

A long-term prospect?

Shikhar Dhawan might not get many opportunities in limited-overs cricket because age is not on his side. Team Management under Kohli and Shastri is looking at KL Rahul as a long term prospect for Team India. In a nutshell, time is running out for Southpaw looking at the future Global events.

Balance of the side

KL Rahul can also keep wickets if needed in limited-overs cricket. That gives team management an option to play extra batsman or an all-rounder if needed in future. KL Rahul can be utilized at crucial fielding positions if he is not keeping. So, at this point in time, KL Rahul clearly ensures stability in the T20 side.

Inconsistent performances

Indian Media is always weighing upon the fact that Shikhar Dhawan is not consistent enough for the international level cricket. He has always done well at ICC events but hasn't set a mark like a Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma so far. Team India might have to think twice when Dhawan's name pops out from the hat.

Injuries and technical issues

Shikhar Dhawan has become injury-prone of late. He is struggling with various injuries for last year or so. Also, his technique has come under severe scanner against some of the match-ups. One of his concerns has been against the left-arm quicks upfront. Only time will tell what lies in store for the veteran batsman.
