India succumbed to a shocking defeat at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday evening at the hands of South Africa by 76 runs. That defeat exposed the fragility in the Indian camp, and their net run rate took a heavy toll. Just one defeat and Team India now find themselves in a precarious position of a possible early exit from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. With only two more games left for India in the Super 8s stage, how can the defending champions bounce back and take an entry into the semifinals? Here are some possible ways.

India to win both their remaining Super 8 fixtures

Team India is drowning after a loss to the Proteas on Sunday. With that loss, the reigning champions are now third in Group 1 with a net run rate of -3.80. The road ahead for India is full of potholes, but for now, they need to focus on the remaining Super 8 fixtures and win both the remaining games.

They are scheduled to play Zimbabwe next in Chennai on February 26, followed by their final Super 8 fixture against the two-time champions, West Indies, on March 1 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. They need to win the remaining two fixtures and hope other results go in their favor as well.

South Africa to win all their remaining fixtures

After a win over India by a colossal margin, South Africa are now placed second on the Group 1 table with a net run rate of +3.800. They next face West Indies on 26th February at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, followed by their final Super 8 fixture against Zimbabwe on March 1 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the nation’s capital, i.e., Delhi.

If South Africa stays unbeaten in the Super 8s stage, Team India will have their task cut out for them. The reigning champions will have to win both their remaining fixtures and win at least one game by a heavy margin. If things fall in place, India should fancy their chances of making it to the semifinals and take one step further to defend their crown.

Can a washout save India?

As mentioned above, two games are left for India to play in the Super 8s. In case either of the two games gets washed out due to persistent rain, Team India won’t have their fortunes in their own hands. There will be a lot of permutations and combinations in that case, and the reigning champions will have to rely on other results to go their way. However, for India to get a clear path for the semifinals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, they need to win all their remaining games, and so does South Africa.
