Virat Kohli loses his position to Steve Smith again in Test rankings

Virat Kohli’s mighty knock in the first Test for at the Edgbaston saw him leapfrog Steve Smith in the Test rankings to become the No.1 Tests batsman in the world.

Virat Kohli smashed a century in the first innings and amassed 149 runs and scored 51 runs in the second innings for India in Birmingham. Although India lost the first Test match by 31 runs, the world took a bow in awe of Kohli.

However, in the second match, adverse pitch conditions and a stiff back added to the problems of Virat Kohli as he couldn’t replicate his dominant run at Lord’s and was dismissed on 23 and 17 respectively in both the innings.

India suffered a heavy defeat against the hosts as Virat Kohli faced his first innings defeat after taking on the Test captaincy from Mahendra Singh Dhoni in 2014.

And now, he has also suffered a jolt on the personal front as his performance at Lord’s saw him lose 15 points as he slipped to Number 2 position beneath Steve Smith with 919 points.

Woakes’ Meteoric Rise:

Woakes massive leap in all departments was a high point of the second Test match at Lord’s. He smashed his maiden century (132* runs off 177 balls) that helped England post a total of 396/7. He also contributed with the ball and dismissed Virat Kohli in the first innings and returned match figures of 2/19 and 2/24 in both the innings.

He now holds the seventh position among all-rounders and 32nd position among the bowlers.

Woakes has also jumped 34 places in the rankings for batsmen as he now sits at 50th position with a career-high 496 points.

Anderson sits atop the ICC bowlers’ rankings: 

Anderson took nine wickets in the second Test match at Lord’s Test has earned him 19 points which helped him break the 900-point barrier as he jumped to the top position with 903 points above South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada.

Enroute, he also became the first England bowler to cross the 900 points mark after Ian Botham who had achieved this feat in 1980.
