Former Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli has finally revealed the reason why he stepped down from the Test captaincy. The champion batter who led the Indian Test side for 8 long years from 2014 till 2022 stated how balancing his batting with leadership was taking a toll on him.

Virat Kohli- ‘There was nothing left in the tank’

The 37-year-old batter, widely regarded as the finest test skipper the country has ever produced, was known for his fearless approach while leading the side. In his tenure, Team India never lost a home Test series and even defeated the mighty Australian team in Australia for the first time in history. He achieved all the success in his impressive tenure; however, a disappointing away series defeat at the hands of South Africa in 2022 saw the talismanic leader leave captaincy once and for all.

During an RCB Innovation event on Tuesday in Tata IPL 2026, Kohli revealed why he left the Test team’s captaincy despite being the finest leader the country ever produced.

“I ended up being in a place where I became the focal point of our batting unit and the focal point of leadership. I didn’t realise how much of load both those things will present in my daily life, to be honest. But because I was so driven to just make sure that Indian cricket stays on top, I didn’t really pay attention to it. And that’s precisely why by the time I left captaincy, I was completely spent. There was nothing left in the tank. I was completely consumed by it. It was gruesome.”
