Is there a better love story than Faf du Plessis and boundary line catches? Don’t think so. Such is his expertise in taking those stunning catches. In the latest match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings, he pulled off one such stunning catch to dismiss the RCB opener Devdutt Padikkal. He was well supported by Ruturaj Gaikwad at the boundary line.
Winning the toss, RCB captain Virat Kohli opted to bat first. But unlike their captain’s wish they lost their star opener, Aaron Finch, quite early in the innings. Then it was up to the captain Virat Kohli and young Devdutt Padikkal to take the team to a comfortable total. Padikkal scored a well placed 22 runs from 21 balls before falling to an incredible fielding effort by Faf and Ruturaj at the boundary line. The incident happened in the 1st ball of the seventh over. Padikkal tried to slog sweep Santner into the long-on region. He didn’t time the ball perfectly and the ball failed to get the required distance and elevation. If for any other fielder that was a sure six, but not for Faf du Plessis. He ran left from long-on to grab the ball. Anticipating that he might touch the boundary ropes, he threw the ball in the air to Ruturaj Gaikwad who was running in from the mid-wicket region. And both together completed a fine catch.
After the fall of Padikkal’s wicket, RCB was rescued to a certain extend by captain Kohli and De Villiers. Both of them scored 50 and 39 runs respectively. Coming into chase down the moderate total of 146 set by the RCB, CSK unlike their usual self got off to a great start courtesy of fine innings from both the openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis. Gaikwad scored 65 of 51 balls are made a statement towards his own team management for not backing him from the beginning of the tournament. CSK captain MS Dhoni had opined that he didn’t push the youngsters as he didn’t see any spark in them. Now that complaint of MSD seems to be solved.
