Team India started off the first ODI against New Zealand in a grand manner as the visitors ended up with a first innings score of 347/4 in 50 overs of play. With Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan out injured, it was Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal who opened the innings with the bat on debut.

The duo got a 50 run stand before Shaw 20 (21) and Agarwal 32 (31) were dismissed in quick succession. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer contributed in the middle and put in a 100 run partnership that revived the innings for the Men in Blue. However, Captain Koli was dismissed for 51 (63) by a googly from Ish Sodhi. Having said that, it was Shreyas Iyer who went on to score his maiden hundred in ODI cricket, while KL Rahul carried on his sublime form from the T20I series.

KL Rahul marches on

The wicket-keeper batsman scored an unbeaten trailblazing knock of 88 from just 64 deliveries that consisted of three fours, and six sixes with a strike rate of 137.50. Rahul’s stroke-making display got the away side to an intimidating first innings total. Plenty of Indian fans have branded KL Rahul as one of the most free-flowing batsmen in the team at the current moment. What solidified the claim, even more, was his ridiculous execution of the reverse scoop in the penultimate over on James Neesham which went for a six over third-man.

The scoop was a clear indication of the confidence and kind of form the 27-year-old has been recently going through.

As for the second innings, Virat Kohli will be backing his bowlers to do their duties and get India the vital lead by the end of the game.
