Watch: Rishabh Pant frustrated after mix up with Ajinkya Rahane leads to runout

During the second day of the first Test of the ongoing India’s tour of New Zealand in Wellington, Indian wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant was involved in a massive miscommunication with Indian vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane which led to his dismissal in the most unlikely manner at a time when India were steadily building a decent partnership.

As it happened

The incident happened on the second delivery of the 59th over when Rahane played a Tim Southee delivery towards point. Rahane, who was interested to take a single, started to run despite non-striker Pant showing his uninterest.

Pant was the right person to call for the run, But Rahane dominated the call and led to massive confusion in the middle which resulted in Pant needing to sacrifice his wicket for Rahane.

Having watched Rahane almost reaching the non-striker’s end, Pant started to run towards the striker’s end to complete the near impossible task of completing the run. There was some confusion with respect to the throw from point fielder Ajaz Patel as well. But the miscommunication between Indian batsmen meant that Pant was done and dusted by a mile.

New Zealand takes Control

Resuming batting from 10* in the morning, Pant ended up scoring 19 (53) with the help of one four and one six. Having scored 46 (138) with the help of five fours, Rahane top-scored for India.

At one point it looked like Pant and Rahane would be able to take India to a 200-plus first innings total, but the former virtually had to sacrifice his wicket for the latter after a horrible mix-up while running between the wickets in the morning session on Day 2.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and put India in to bat first yesterday, his bowlers justified his decision by bowling out the visitors for 165 in 68.1 overs. With bowling figures of 16-3-39-4, debutant New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson was the pick of their bowlers.
