It hasn’t even been a week since the start of the Pakistan Super League 2020 and the league has also been in news for several things, most of which won’t make the Pakistan Cricket Board happy. Incidentally, this is the first time the entire tournament will be played in Pakistan. Another incident happened during the match between Quetta Gladiators and Karachi Kings in Karachi on Sunday which again raised fingers on the tournament’s credibility.

Babar Azam declared not out after Ultra Edge fails to work

During the sixth match of the tournament at the National Stadium in Karachi, Kings’ batsman Babar Azam got a beautiful delivery from Gladiators’ young pacer Naseem Shah and might have edged it. The ball had landed clearly in the gloves of the Sarfaraz as the appeal was made by the Gladiators’ team. The umpire didn’t give it out but Shah seemed very confident that Azam had edged it.

Quetta’s captain Sarfaraz Ahmed opted for a DRS (Decision Review System) and the decision was referred to the third umpire. After a few moments, Sarfaraz was seen having an animated chat with the on-field umpire. On further understanding the situation, it was revealed that the ultra edge technology wasn’t working at the time, because of which the third umpire didn’t get any conclusive evidence that Azam had edged the ball or not. Due to the unavailability of ultra edge, Azam was declared not out. Watch the video and check Sarfaraz’s reaction:

After having a discussion with the on-field umpire, Sarfaraz Ahmed slowly walked back to his position shaking his head in disappointment. This is not the first time the cricketing world has witnessed this sort of an incident but surely, this would send alert across Pakistan Cricket Board to fix the technical issues such as this. Decision Review System has now become an integral part of modern-day cricket and inability to provide the right technology does put Pakistan Super League under the scanner. Previously, Bangladesh Premier League had also faced many issues with the DRS technology. With the entire tournament yet to be played, Pakistan Super League must fix this issue, else there could be soon backlash from the players and the officials.
