SA Playing 11: South Africa haven’t played a test series in the Caribbean since 2010 and it is here that Dean Elgar will look to mark a new era in South African cricket by taking over the captaincy of the test team. South Africa last played a test match in February this year in Pakistan and a lot has changed since then, not only in the world but also in the SA test squad with the retirement of Faf du Plessis.
First match will start at Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in St Lucia on 10th June. To continue the build-up, we will take a look at the possible playing XI of the touring party.
The top-order of South African test side is pretty much settled and not likely to see any changes in that regard. Captain Dean Elgar will be accompanied by his regular partner Aiden Markram on this tour as well. Both had decent scores at different stages of the Pakistan tour. Rassie van der Dussen is also coming off from a good Pakistan series and will bat at No 3 for this series as well.
This the area where team management will have to give a lot of thoughts after the retirement of Faf du Plessis. It will be interesting see if they go with a specialist batsman or fill the spot with an all-rounder and push Temba Bavuma a place up in the batting order. Keegan Petersen is likely to make his test debut as things stand as of now. Quinton de Kock will keep wickets while all-rounder Wiaan Mulder is likely to continue after an impressive first season.
In pace bowling department, selections are looking straight forward for South Africa. Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje will be joined by Lungi Ngidi to complete a strong seam bowling core. They will have to pick between Keshav Maharaj and George Linde as a lone spinner if we go by the trend in past couple of years in WI. Both have had fantastic tour of Pakistan in February.
