The Women’s Premier League 2027 (WPL 2027) auction concluded in Kochi last evening. All five franchises have tuned up their squads ahead of the marquee event, with 25 players sold out of 27 available slots and a total spend of ₹6.25 crore; teams took distinctly different tactical routes.
While some franchises sorted their marquee international all-rounders, others quietly bolstered their squad with some crucial domestic picks. Take a look at the in-depth breakdown of how Mumbai Indians Women, Delhi Capitals Women, Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women, Gujarat Giants, and UP Warriorz stack up following the WPL 2027 auction.
The defending and two-time champions entered the auctions with a settled core with the likes of Ellyse Perry, Smriti Mandhana, and Richa Ghosh. They were looking to add some middle-order power and succeeded with the same by getting the likes of Tejal Hasabnis, Chloe Tryon, Vrinda Dinesh, and Jess Jonassen.
The four-time finalists made one of the biggest splashes of the day by securing hard-hitting Indian batter Kiran Navgire for ₹75 lakh. Navgire is a key batter who can take the bowlers on at any stage of the game. She joins the raw batting core of Shafali Verma, Jemmimah Rodrigues, and Laura Woolvardt.
Gujarat Giants have been a failure in all four seasons of the Tata WPL. However, their squad ahead of this season is seemingly the most complete one after they opted for six purchases in the WPL 2027 auction. Among the six buys, the Giants made history by signing Irish all-rounder Orla Prendergast for ₹30 lakh, making her the first cricketer from Ireland to secure a WPL contract. She will complement other match winners, including Ashleigh Gardner and Sophie Devine, in the squad.
The two-time champions, the Mumbai Indians women, have made some crucial purchases ahead of this season. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side opted for 6 purchases in the auction, with hard-hitting Shweta Sehrawat being their top pick for ₹20 lakh.
The UP Warriorz entered the WPL 2027 auctions with the largest remaining purse, i.e., ₹3.75 crore. On expected lines, they emerged as the busiest franchise throughout the auction, making eight acquisitions and headlining the event by signing Australia’s T20 World Cup-winning skipper Sophie Molineux for a whopping ₹1.10 crore. They also re-acquired Australian finisher Grace Harris for ₹30 lakh to fix their middle-order scoring rates. Sophie and Grace join fellow Aussies Meg Lanning and Phoebe Litchfield in the Warriorz setup.
