Cardiff, June 01, Saturday at 03:00 PM IST

New Zealand will launch their ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 campaign against Sri Lanka at Sophia Garden in Cardiff on Saturday afternoon. The Kiwis were the finalists in the last edition (CWC 2015) and will be eyeing the World Cup glory this time. Led by Kane Williamson, New Zealand is one of the favourites for the World Cup Trophy and also against Sri Lanka in the opener.

Playing under the leadership of Dimuth Karunaratne, Sri Lanka are low on confidence as the 1996 World Cup winning side has lost eight out of last nine ODIs. They have slipped to ninth place in the ICC ODI rankings.

  • If Latham features in the playing11, Tom Blundell will have to sit on the bench
  • Tim Southee complained about calf injury in the training session on Friday. His availability is a bit doubtful
  • If Southee misses out, Matt Henry will get a game
  • Avishka Fernando – who twisted his ankle in the warm-up game against South Africa – will remain on the bench

SL vs NZ DREAM11 GRAND LEAGUE TEAMS

Team 1 and 2: As per the pitch conditions

The pitch in Cardiff is a bit slow in nature in comparison to other venues and also offers some bounce. Ish Sodhi and M Santner can trouble the Sri Lankan Tigers with their flighted deliveries and turns.

Also, Ish Sodhi has bagged 8 wickets in 3 innings against Sri Lanka which makes a contender for captain/vice captain

Team 3 and 4: Kiwi pacers at work

Sri Lanka hasn’t looked good with the bat lately. In the two warmup games, they have managed 251 against South Africa and 239/8 against Australia. Trent Boult and Tim Southee form a formidable pace attack for New Zealand.

Tim Southee has picked up 33 wickets in Cricket World Cup. In Cricket World Cup history, he is the third most wicket-taker as a Kiwi bowler.  He has picked 23 wickets against Sri Lanka at an average of 28.43 and economy less than 6.

Trent Boult picked four wickets in both the warmup games against India and Windies. In overcast conditions, he can be completely lethal with his swing abilities. He has taken 147 wickets in ODI.

** Tim Southee is a bit doubtful. Please check the toss update for the final news

Team 5 and 6: Sri Lanka causing an upset

The most experienced Lasith Malinga has an impressive record against Sri Lanka. He has dismissed M Guptill thrice in the last ODI Series. He also dismissed Colin Munro twice in 3 Innings.

Angelo Mathews is another dark horse for Sri Lanka. The experienced all-rounder is a consistent performer with the bat for Sri Lanka. He averages 38.83 against New Zealand with the bat and has slammed two fifties in last four innings against the opposition
