Ground: Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara Date and Time: 24 December 2024 at 1:30 PM IST
The Indian Women’s team made a resounding statement in the first ODI, securing a thumping 211-run victory against the West Indies. After a tough 0-3 series loss to Australia earlier, India’s performance was a perfect response. Smriti Mandhana showcased her brilliance with the bat, continuing her red-hot form with a spectacular 91. Remarkably, Mandhana has now notched five consecutive fifty-plus scores in international cricket. Debutant Pratika Rawal added flair with an impressive innings, while experienced campaigners Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues accelerated in the death overs.
India’s bowling unit also stepped up, led by Renuka Singh Thakur, who dismantled the West Indies’ top order with career-best figures. The win not only gave India a 1-0 lead but also highlighted their all-round strength.
The West Indies Women’s team, led by Hayley Matthews, has had a tough run recently. After their 3-0 sweep against Pakistan earlier this year, they endured a disappointing series in Sri Lanka and now face another challenge in India. The visitors’ batting faltered in the first ODI, leaving them with much to rectify. Zaida James emerged as a standout performer, claiming five wickets, but the team’s overall effort fell short. Matthews and all-rounder Deandra Dottin will be crucial if the West Indies are to square the series in this must-win game.

The Kotambi Stadium is a relatively new venue for women’s cricket, hosting its inaugural ODI in the first match of this series. While the exact nature of the pitch remains uncertain, it showed signs of being a sporting wicket in the opener. Captains might prefer to field first to counter the dew factor later in the game.
