The two of the most decorated teams of the Indian T20 League are all set to battle it out in the 56th match of the season. Mumbai and Kolkata will meet again this season for an epic showdown.
The last time when these two teams collided, the men in Purple emerged victorious. However, recently, Mumbai has struck a winning streak and looks determined on taking on their next challenges.
Mumbai is the first team this season who were ruled out of contention for the playoffs. The team is at the bottom of the points table with only 2 wins to its name. However, recently, the men in Blue won 2 back-to-back matches.
Throughout the season, Mumbai’s batting order was its main concern. With skipper Rohit Sharma out of form, the top order of the batting lineup suffered a lot. The addition of Suryakumar Yadav really helped the batting order of Mumbai. Yadav quickly became the highest run-scorer for Mumbai this season. In the last match, the batting lineup bounced back and found some rhythm. Openers Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma helped the team with their decent individual performances.
Jasprit Bumrah has been out of touch since the start of the season. There have been times when he bowled brilliantly but was unable to take wickets for the team. The addition of Daniel Sams and Riley Meredith have been a blessing for Mumbai’s bowling unit. The pace of both the bowlers have troubled the batters this season.
Kolkata has had a mixed season so far. The team have won some dramatic matches and have lost some of the most easy matches in the history of the Indian T20 League. Shah Rukh Khan’s team is currently at number 9 of the points table. Kolkata has lost 7 matches with just 4 wins to their names.
The batting unit of the team took a huge hit this season because of the off-key performance of Venkatesh Iyer. However, skipper Shreyas Iyer has been the backbone of Kolkata’s batting lineup. Iyer has put runs on the board with his excellent batting between the wickets. Apart from Iyer, the rest of the batters have not stepped up to the mark.
Sunil Narine has been very lazy in the fielding, the former Purple Cap holder has not created a significant difference with the white bowl as well. Pacer Umesh Yadav was once the highest wicket-taker of this season. However, now Yadav is nowhere near the contention of the Purple Cap.
The spinners generally get grip from this surface, and it is very difficult to hit them in the middle overs of the game. Even, the slower balls of the pacers stick to the surface to make life difficult for the batters.
