On Saturday, New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka in commanding fashion in 1st ODI at Eden Park in Auckland. Henry Shipley was the star for Kiwis as Sri Lanka got bundled out for 76 while chasing 275, giving the hosts a 198-run win.
After opting to bat, Finn Allen’s half-century set the tone for the hosts, as they managed to post a respectable total of 274, with Chamika Karunaratne returning a four-fer for Sri Lanka.
In response, Sri Lanka struggled to stitch a partnership and only three of their batters managed to register double-digit scores. Angelo Mathews, Chamika Karunaratne, and Lahiru Kumara were the only ones to put up a fight as Shipley returned to the attack to dismiss Karunaratne and bag his fifer.
New Zealand’s impressive victory in the first ODI puts them in a strong position for the rest of the series. The second ODI is scheduled to be held on March 29 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
