Sri Lanka suffered an embarrassing defeat against New Zealand in the first ODI at Eden Park in Auckland. Henry Shipley took a fifer as Sri Lanka struggled to register a total of 76 – their fifth-lowest ODI total and the lowest total against New Zealand.
The hosts posted a competitive 274 onboard after opting to bat first. In response, Sri Lanka’s top half was blown away within the first 10 overs of their innings, with Shipley bagging four of those wickets and Nuwindu Fernando getting run out. The visitors struggled to stitch a partnership and only three of their batters managed to register double-digit scores.
With the second ODI scheduled to be held on March 29 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, Sri Lanka will have to regroup and come back stronger to level the series.
