In 1979, during the 78th ODI match, West Indies’ Desmond Haynes and Viv Richards achieved a remarkable feat by forming the first-ever 200-run partnership in ODI cricket. Their collaboration as the second-wicket pair yielded an impressive 205 runs against Australia in Melbourne. This outstanding performance propelled West Indies to a total of 271/2. Ultimately, West Indies emerged victorious in the Benson & Hedges World Series Cup match, securing an 80-run victory.

Nearly two decades later, in 1999, India accomplished another significant milestone by forging the first-ever 300-run partnership in ODI history. Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid led this extraordinary achievement by amassing an impressive 318 runs for the second wicket against Sri Lanka at Taunton during the ICC World Cup.

India’s initial 200-run partnership, on the other hand, occurred in 1996 during a match against Pakistan at Sharjah. Sachin Tendulkar and Navjot Singh Sidhu played a pivotal role in this memorable feat, with both batsmen scoring centuries. Together, they established a remarkable 231-run partnership for the second wicket, enabling India to surpass the 300-run mark for the first time in their ODI history.

Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels – 372 vs Zimbabwe, 2015

In their pool B match of the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup at Canberra against Zimbabwe, West Indies, the clear favorites, faced an early setback when opener Dwayne Smith was dismissed for a duck in just the second ball. However, the explosive Chris Gayle joined forces with Marlon Samuels, and together they mounted an impressive recovery. With the score at 0/1, the pair batted throughout the entire 50 overs, amassing a monumental total. Gayle showcased his sheer dominance, smashing a breathtaking 215 runs off a mere 147 balls, comprising an astonishing 16 sixes.

His innings came to an end on the last ball of the innings, narrowly missing out on setting a new record for the most sixes by a single player in a match. Meanwhile, Samuels played a more measured innings, scoring an unbeaten 133 off 156 deliveries. Their remarkable partnership of 372 runs not only propelled West Indies to a mammoth total of 372/2 but also became the highest partnership in ODI history at that time. With such a formidable target, West Indies eventually secured victory by 89 runs through the D/L method.

John Campbell and Shai Hope – 365 vs Ireland, 2019

During a tri-nation series in 2019 held in Dublin, West Indies displayed their dominance once again by achieving the second-highest partnership in ODIs. Opting to bat first, John Campbell and Shai Hope formed an outstanding opening pair. Their remarkable performance left Ireland struggling to take their first wicket until the 48th over, with West Indies already amassing a formidable total of 365 runs. John Campbell’s exceptional innings of 179 runs came off 137 deliveries, including 15 boundaries and six sixes, while Shai Hope showcased his batting prowess with 170 runs off 152 balls, comprising of 22 boundaries and two sixes. With a mammoth total of 381/3, West Indies further demonstrated their strength by dismissing Ireland for a mere 185 runs.

Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid – 331 vs New Zealand, 1999

During New Zealand’s tour of India in 1999, after the Kiwis secured a 1-0 lead in the first ODI, India aimed to make a comeback in the second ODI held in Hyderabad. Sourav Ganguly was dismissed early in the innings, leading Rahul Dravid to join captain Sachin Tendulkar at the crease. Displaying remarkable resilience and skill, the pair showcased a magnificent partnership that lasted until the 48th over, accumulating a staggering 331 runs. In this incredible innings, Rahul Dravid achieved his highest ODI score, scoring a run-a-ball 153, while Sachin Tendulkar remained unbeaten with an outstanding 186 runs, comprising of 20 boundaries and three sixes. Their extraordinary performance propelled India to a formidable total of 376/2. Eventually, New Zealand was bundled out for a mere 202 runs, securing a resounding victory for India.
