Rahul Dravid made coach: Former Indian captain, Rahul Dravid has been assigned the role of a coach in the Indian national team for the upcoming tour to Sri Lanka.
Rahul Dravid had earlier been the batting consultant of the senior team in England during 2014, and this will now be his second stint with the national side.
Since Ravi Shastri and most of the first team members of the Indian team will be in England from June to September, the BCCI had confirmed that quite a few new faces and fresh talent will be given an opportunity for the Sri Lanka series that takes place from July 13-27. Considering, the fact that Dravid has mentored most of the India A players, it made perfect sense to hand him with the role of coach for the tour ahead.
“The Team India coaching staff will be in the UK and it is best that the young team is guided by Dravid as he has already worked with almost all of the India ‘A’ boys. The comfort the youngsters share with him will be an added advantage,” said one of the officials.
The tour to Sri Lanka consists of three ODIs and three T20Is.
Rahul Dravid has often been praised for his work behind the scenes, and for his ability of nurturing and bringing out the best possible talent to the big stage. Under his tenure, the India U-19 team lifted the World Cup in 2018, which included the likes of Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, Shivam Mavi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti and plenty others.
His time as cricketer for India was also a remarkable one. Regarded as ‘The Wall,’ Rahul Dravid scored 13288 runs from 164 Tests and 10889 runs in 344 matches in ODI cricket. He had played just the one T20I, which was also his farewell game against England, as he scored a quick fire knock of 31 runs.
