The Indian Premier League has been one of the World’s most lucrative T20 leagues since its introduction in 2008. Big names across the globe over the years have made a big impact and led their franchises to the title victory. However, apart from the well-known players, there have been many unknown faces who left a mark, proving their mettle to the world.
Since the India Premier (IPL) has started, the marquee tournament has been at its exciting best. Fans across the globe have witnessed many nail-biters over the years. However, apart from the exciting matches, the cash-rich league has been host to many intense matches that were marred with many controversies and managed to attract the attention of the cricket fraternity.
In this article, we will take a look at five controversial dismissals in the history of the Indian Premier League.
Jos Buttler mankad by R Ashwin during IPL 2019
R Ashwin Mankading Jos Buttler in a game during IPL 2019 is unarguably one of the most controversial dismissals in the history of the marquee tournament. It was during the match between Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) an incident took place that shook the entire cricket fraternity.
Chasing the target, Jos Buttler was at his best and was quickly taking the match away from Kings XI Punjab. When R Ashwin came into the attack, he saw the wicket-keeper batsman backing up too far at the non-striker’s end and stopped midway through his bowling action and knocked over the bails, appealing for a ‘mankading’ dismissal. The on-field umpires, however, didn’t withdraw the appeal and adjudged Buttler out.
Even though the mankading falls between the legal rules of cricket, R Ashwin became some sort of a villain as many felt that it wasn’t in the spirit of the game and the off-spinner didn’t show sportsmanship. The decision completely changed the match as KXIP made a comeback and in the end, won the match.
