IPL 2008 First Match Scorecard: The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most popular T20 cricket leagues in the world. It was first launched in 2008, and its inaugural match was played on April 18, 2008, between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M. The KKR innings started with Sourav Ganguly and Brendon McCullum walking out to bat. Ganguly was the first to fall, bowled by Zaheer Khan after scoring 10 runs off 12 balls. Ricky Ponting then joined McCullum, and the pair added 51 runs for the second wicket. Ponting was dismissed for 20 runs off 20 balls, caught by Praveen Kumar off the bowling of Jacques Kallis. However, it was McCullum’s innings that set the tone for the match. He remained unbeaten throughout the innings and scored an incredible 158 runs off just 73 balls, including 10 fours and 13 sixes, at a strike rate of 216.43. He was well supported by Mohammad Hafeez, who scored 5 runs off 3 balls, as KKR posted a mammoth total of 222/3 in their 20 overs.

Chasing a target of 223 runs, RCB had a disastrous start to their innings as they lost their first four wickets for just 24 runs in 5.2 overs. The KKR bowlers, led by Ajit Agarkar, were on fire, and the RCB batsmen had no answer to their bowling. Agarkar picked up three wickets for 25 runs in his 4 overs, while Ashok Dinda picked up two wickets for just 9 runs in his 3 overs.
Mark Boucher was the top scorer for RCB with 7 runs off 9 balls, while Praveen Kumar scored an unbeaten 18 off 15 balls. RCB were eventually bowled out for just 82 runs in 15.1 overs, losing the match by a massive 140 runs.
KKR’s win was a historic one as it was the first match of the IPL, and the team had put up an incredible performance. Brendon McCullum’s innings was one of the most memorable ones in IPL history, and it set the tone for the rest of the tournament.
