Robin Uthappa in IPL Career and Performance

Uthappa started his Indian Premier League venture with the Mumbai Indians. He made a reasonable 320 runs from 14 matches which involved some quickfire 30s and 40s. Royal Challengers Bangalore swapped him with Zaheer Khan in 2009. He had a disappointing first season as he made just 175 runs at an average of 15.90. 2010 was miles better, and he scored three match-winning knocks. He also scored the second-fastest fifty in IPL and hit the most number of sixes that season.

Pune Warriors India bought him for the 2011 season. The team failed to leave the bottom spot in all its three seasons. But Uthappa performed well and was their leading run-scorer in 2011 and 2012.

Uthappa’s finest years in the IPL came in purple colors. Kolkata Knight Riders drafted him into the side in the 2014 IPL season. The first leg that year happened in the UAE. Uthappa failed to impress in Dubai and was later promoted to open the innings alongside Gautam Gambhir. This move changed the fortunes of both Uthappa and his team. He went on to amass 660 runs at an average of 44, winning the Orange cap in the process. KKR were crowned champions that year.

In the following years, Uthappa performed steadily opening the innings and scored runs at an average of around 30. He holds the record for the most consecutive 40+ scores (10). Matthew Hayden had 8. He was eventually released by KKR in 2020 when the Rajasthan Royals purchased him. Uthappa floated up and down the order, and RR failed to utilize him properly. He scored 196 runs in 12 games for the Rajasthan outfit.

The IPL veteran currently plies his trade with the Chennai Super Kings. The 35-year-old is at the fag end of his career and is keen to do well in his new home.

Uthappa is a part of the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League 2021. The Chennai-based team is slightly partial towards experienced players over youth. The likes of Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Imran Tahir, etc., have thrived under MS Dhoni in recent seasons. Robin Uthappa would be looking to replicate their success and put on a show for the Whistle Podu Army.

Robin has previously played for the Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Pune Warriors India, and the Rajasthan Royals.

FAQS

Which team is Robin Uthappa in IPL 2021?

Chennai Super Kings have bagged Uthappa’s services for IPL 2021. After the retirement of Shane Watson, CSK has been in the market for an opener. Robin was traded from the Rajasthan Royals in January. “I am very excited and proud to represent a team like CSK, happy the team has put faith in my ability and I am hopeful of a good season. I am at a happy place in my life and feel confident after a good domestic season. The IPL is a level higher, but having runs under your belt is a confidence booster always,” he said.

Who is the opener of CSK 2021?

The Chennai Super Kings have started IPL 2021 with two brilliant openers. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis are combining well together; the South African has scored four half-centuries in seven games, while his Indian counterpart is also batting well, scoring 196 runs over this time span which includes two half-centuries as a result of some excellent work at the top. Moeen Ali usually comes out to bat no. 3 and has played in six games. Rayudu typically plays after him. Dhoni, Jadeja, and Curran bat between numbers five and eight depending on how the match is progressing.

Will Robin Uthappa be opener for CSK?

Uthappa has been an opener for most of his career. He has faced the new ball for the India national team as well as in IPL cricket. He had a modest outing with Rajasthan Royals last year, where he did open the innings on a few occasions. Uthappa is yet to play a game this year. It is hard to see why MSD and Co. would change the winning combination unless Gaikwad underperforms. At the moment, it is a difficult task getting into the CSK side. Even Krishnappa Gowtham, who was sold for INR 9.5 crores, is yet to feature this year. It will be interesting to see how Uthappa performs if given a chance.
