Suryakumar Yadav was born in a middle-class family of Uttar Pradesh. He loved both cricket and badminton growing up but he end up choosing cricket as profession. His uncle was his first cricket coach, Vinod Yadav.

The year he started playing cricket for his school team, his family shifted to Mumbai from Varanasi. He was enrolled in Vengsarkar Cricket Academy.

On FC debut in 2010, SKY scored a quickfire 73 runs off 89 balls for Mumbai against Delhi. In IPL 2012, he was selected for the first time but got overshadowed by Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Mahela Jayawardene, and Kieron Pollard.
