India to host 2021 T20 World Cup

International Cricket Council (ICC) board, which met via a teleconference this evening has decided not to take away the hosting rights of the 2021 T20 World Cup from India. The decision came in after a mutual agreement between the BCCI and Cricket Australia regarding the hosting of the mega event. On the other hand, Australia, who were to host the event in 2020, will get a chance to stage the mega event in 2022.
2021 T20 World Cup hosting rights stays with India
The widespread coronavirus pandemic had disrupted the entire sporting calendar, and cricket is no different. Due to these unprecedented situations, ICC was forced to postpone the T20 World Cup which was supposed to be held in Australia during the October-November window this year to the immediate next year. This raised several questions regarding the hosting rights of the mega event among the cricket fraternity as ICC had earlier granted BCCI, the rights to host another T20 World Cup in 2021.

To settle the dispute, the two boards in contention- the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) and Cricket Australia discussed the issue under the guidance of the ICC via a teleconference. They reached a mutual agreement and decided to stay with the original plan of hosting the 2021 T20 World Cup in India. While Australia, who were to host the event in 2020 will get the opportunity for the same in 2022.
“We now have absolute clarity on the future of ICC events enabling all of our Members to focus on the rescheduling of lost international and domestic cricket. We will now proceed as planned with the Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in India and host the 2022 edition in Australia”, said ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney.
This means that the defending champions West Indies will be defending their title in the same place in which they were crowned the champions in 2016.
Mega Cricket season lined up in India post COVID-19
This decision has paved the way for a mega cricket carnival in India post-COVID-19. Apart from this T20 World Cup, India will most likely host the fourteenth edition of the Indian Premier League during the April-May window next year, if the spread of COVID-19 gets reduced. The thirteenth edition of the tournament had already been shifted to the UAE, due to the prevailing health crisis in India.
Apart from these major T20 competitions, India also do have secured the rights to host the 2023 ODI World Cup. India had earlier co-hosted the pinnacle event along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in 2011.
Women’s World Cup postponed to 2022
Along with the changes in Men’s cricketing schedule, Women’s cricket has also been subjected to change in plans as the Women’s ODI World Cup which was scheduled to be held in New Zealand between February 6 and March 7, 2021, has been postponed to 2022.
