Second half goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio ensured a 2-1 win in the Nederlands. With the advantage of home and the aggregate scoreline, Madrid should qualify for the quarterfinals.

Ajax meanwhile displayed flashes of brilliance at times during the first leg at Johan Cruijff ArenA. They are a young squad but showed maturity against a side which won the last 3 Champions League. And it would have been a deserving result had Karim Benzema not scored the 2nd goal late on.

Since losing to Madrid, the Lancers are on 3 games winning streak beating NAC Breda, ADO Den Haag and Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie. They are very much in contention for the league title.

Indeed, the loss in the first leg was Ajax’s first in the Champions Legaue this season. They finished 2nd in the group stage behind Bayern Munich which shows that Erik ten Hag’s side is capable of achieving results against big teams.
