Having suffered a 2-1 defeat in the first leg of Copa del Rey, Barcelona will have their task cut out when they host Levante in the 2nd leg at Camp Noise, in Barcelona, on Wednesday night (IST).

Barcelona will take some solace from a late Philippe Coutinho penalty in the first leg which kept the tie well within winning range. But Ernesto Valverde’s decision to rest key players certainly backfired in a big way.

Long gone are the days when the Catalan giants used to field talented young La Masia prodigies in the cup ties and successfully negotiated them. At the moment, there is no apparent real depth and quality in Barca’s roster these days with the playing 11, add two or three players, remaining Valverde’s best bet to win games.

But one player who is the first team element, and who is certainly going through a personal bad phase and needs to show his worth to the manager is Coutinho. The former Liverpool playmaker has found himself on the bench more often than his liking. Even the manager came out in the media and asked him to win his place in the starting 11.

Coutinho scored the penalty and it was enough to hand him another start at the weekend against Eibar. But the Brazilian was not that effective in the match and the doubters continue to raise questions about his true identity at Camp Nou.

But expect him to start here, while the other bi guns should be involved as well as Barcelona look to win their fifth consecutive Copa del Rey.

For Levante, the last match was sweet revenge for the 0-5 thumping they suffered at the hand of Barcelona in the La Liga.
