Selling your best player in the transfer is never a good idea especially when the club fails to bring in an out and out player to replace him. Watford did just that when they cashed in for Richarlison, selling him to Everton in a whopping £50m deal in the summer of 2018.

The move was understandable for both parties as Richarlison was coming from a stellar season with Watford, while Everton were in need of a world-class playmaker. And considering the form can have a very big impact on a player’s transfer value, perhaps the timing was right as well.

However, Watford’s reluctance to spend the money on the new arrivals portended a very difficult season for manager Javi Garcia. A mid-table finish and a scuffle with the teams fighting for their top-flight status was the predicted scenario for them. But nothing like that happened.

The Hornets started the season with a bang, winning the first four games of the season, including a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur. And all the lingering doubts about their potential were nipped in their bud.

As things stand, Watford sit 8th with 43 points in the Premier League, just one point adrift of 7th placed Wolves. This is a phenomenal return and without a shadow of any doubt, they have exceeded the expectations by some stretch.

This could be the highest the Hornets could fly in the Premier League this season, but FA Cup gives an opportunity to put the cherry over their achievement. It’s a knockout competition, and we all know what can happen in a one-off game. On their day, Watford have the capability to strike a hammer blow to any opponent.

Watford may have done wonders but the same can’t be said about their opponents Crystal Palace. In fact, underperforming would be an understatement for the kind of situation this club finds itself in at the moment.

Be it the wings, the center of the field or advance positions, the Eagles boast quality everywhere in their ranks. The likes of Andros Townsend, Wilfried Zaha, Luka Milivojević, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Patrick van Aanholt are too good a talent to flirt with the relegation. But the fact is they are, and that’s a worrying sign for the club and in particular for manager Roy Hodgson.
