Japan Team News:

  • Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu named the squad for the 2019 Copa America, and it looks young and inexperienced. Perhaps he has selected the players while keeping an eye on the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
  • There are 17 first timers in the squad and he wasn’t shy in accepting why he took that decision.

“I’ve selected many players who are in the age group to play at the Tokyo Olympics,” Japan’s manager said.

“I wanted the young players to grow ahead of next year’s Olympics by competing at this wonderful tournament, the Copa America.”

  • Seventeen-year-old FC Tokyo‘s talented youngster Takefusa Kubo leads the pack of newcomers. He will be eligible for next year’s Olympic tournament, which will be contested by under-23 teams with only a few overage players in the squad. Watch out for him.
Rumors have it that both Barcelona and Real Madrid are battling for FC Tokyo’s attacking midfielder Takefusa Kubo’s signature. Image Credit @Twitter.
  • There are a few high-profile players who missed out the chance to play in the Copa America. One of them is Southampton center-back Maya Yoshida. The 30-year-old captained the Samurai Blue in the World Cup as well as in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.
  • Other is Newcastle United‘s forward Yoshinori Muto who was a surprise exclusion from the list. Though, it was expected as he started just six games for Rafa Benitez in the 2018-19 season, scoring only a single goal. Not a good record at this level.
  • Galatasaray left-back Yuto Nagatomo missed out as well and joining him on summer vacation are his AFC Asian Cup 2019 teammates Yuya Osaka, Takuma Asano, and Koya Kitagawa.
  • We will be seeing a new player in goal as the trio of Daniel Schmidt, Shuichi Gonda, and Masaaki Higashiguchi, who represented Japan in the Asian Cup, have been replaced by Eiji Kawashima, Ryosuke Kojima, and Keisuke Osako.
  • Former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Shinji Kagawa’s international career seems to be on the end as he has been left out of the squad.

  • In terms of the experience, Leicester City forward Shinji Okazaki and Strasbourg goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima were among a small handful of veterans with World Cup experience named to the squad.

Possible ins or outs of this game:

  • As mentioned above, there are 17 first timers in the squad, so nothing can’t be said with surety about what will be Hajime Moriyasu’s playing 11 here. Still, the manager will want to name a strong XI nonetheless and we can come around to the possible XI to some degrees.
  • Strasbourg’s Eiji Kawashima seems ahead in line to start in goal ahead of Ryosuke Kojima and Keisuke Osakoline.
  • It’s a friendly game and we think Okazaki may be saved for the Copa America, or his minutes may be restricted to give either Daizen Maeda or Ayase Ueda or both to give the first-hand experience in the forward positions.
  • For the center-back positions, Naomichi Ueda, Ko Itakura, Daiki Sugioka and Tomoki Iwata will be battling for a place in the starting 11.
  • Daiki Suga is the likeliest to play on the left side of defense after his 2019 breakthrough season with Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo in J1 League, while Teruki Hara could play on the right-back position.

Trinidad and Tobago Team News:

  • Trinidad and Tobago will be without a number of important players for the team’s upcoming friendly games against Japan and the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
  • Manager Dennis Lawrence confirmed that Sheldon Bateau will be missing both the friendly game against Japan and the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The reason being the clause inserted in his contract when he joined Norway’s Sarpsborg which requires his services when the season is in full swing.

  • Another experienced player Ataullah Guerra will not be available for selection due to some undisclosed reasons.
  • The Soca Warriors could be without more players for the Japan game as Aubrey David, Joevin Jones, Willis Plaza, and Marcus Joseph are having issues in getting the visas.
  • The manager also revealed that pacy forward Rundell Winchester is also unavailable at present, after requesting time off to deal with a family-related matter.

Possible ins or outs of this game:

Minnesota midfielder Kevin Molino is expected to miss the Japan match. Image Credit @Twitter
  • Minnesota United’s attacking midfielder Kevin Molino is the part of the squad but he may not be available for the Japan game, according to the reports. But the 28-year-old will definitely be available for selection for Trinidad’s first game of the 2019 CONCACAF Cup against Panama on June 18th.

Probable XI: Marvin Phillip (GK), A Jones, C Mitchell, D Cyrus, M Williams, K George, J Williams, K Hyland, L Paul, N Lewis, L Garcia

Captain and Vice-Captain Selection:

Considering the squad of both the teams, the game will be land of opportunity for both sets of players. It’s up to the players now to cash in on this golden chance.

Japan are far more talented than Trinidad and will be the likely winner in this match, They will dominate the proceedings and that’s why selecting their players in numbers will be a good option.

As mentioned, Takefusa Kubo will be the one to watch here, while Shinji Okazaki, if he starts, will be a threat.
