Captain and Vice-Captain Selection:

Saki Kumagai – Playing for the best women’s football club in the world, Lyon is one thing and getting nominated for all the individual awards despite being a defender is a whole lot different thing. That’s an indicator of how big a player Saki Kumagai is for both her club Lyon and her country.

Against Argentina, she was a rock at the back. Whatever little opportunities opponents created were nipped in their bud by her. Expect another stellar show from her at the back.

Mana Iwabuchi – She didn’t start the game, but came off the bench and looked lively. She is one of Japan’s most gifted player, and the team could do with her playing from the off. She was the force behind Japan’s 2018 AFC Asian Women Cup triumph and was deservedly named as the MVP of the tournament. Expect her to make an impact in this game.

Kim Little – She could cause trouble to Japan’s aspirations. Image@AP

Kim Little – Played forward passes at every opportunity and was amongst the most consistent players on the pitch. Deployed either as a No-10 or as a midfielder, she knows where the goal is, scoring over 50 times in over 130 caps for her country.

X-Factor:

Rikako Kobayashi – Though she was overlooked in the last game, she could be Japan’s X-Factor if given a chance. The 21-year-old has the speed and the eye for the goal. She can play both as a forward or in a no-10 role.

Claire Emslie: Scored a late goal against England and it was the least she and her team deserved. With the goal in her kitty, expect her to be a bit more motivated for this game.
