This is the first time since the inception of Indian Super League in 2014 that NorthEast United are playing in the playoffs. So in every sense, this has been a historical season for this club. Now the next target for Eelco Schattorie is to better the achievement and take his team one step closer to the ultimate glory.

The Highlanders finished the regular campaign fourth in the table. With seven wins and the joint fewest losses, they accumulated 27 points from 18 games, finishing just two points above 5th placed Jamshedpur FC.

Unlike other teams, NorthEast didn’t have too many big names on their roster and relied heavily on Bartholomew Ogbeche for the goals. The 34-year-old Nigerian forward didn’t let anybody down, scoring 12 goals so far. It’s hard to fathom where the team would have finished had it not for Ogbeche’s incredible form.

Other than him, Federico Gallego thrived from the midfield, and his understanding with Ogbeche was a joy to watch. The Uruguayan scored four goals and set up another five goals for his teammates.

But the one aspect that may have pushed the Highlanders to the top-4 is their defense, with just 18 goals conceded in the regular season. The achievement looks even more impressive if we consider that Eelco Schattorie’s men scored only the 7th most goals in 18 games.

For the 2nd season in a row, Bengaluru FC topped the regular season table. This time, whoever, they failed to match the 40 points tally of the last season, still, they were the team to beat for many months.
