The table shows that this is a fixture between the first versus the second. Indeed, it is. But it’s nothing more than that. There are hardly any stakes on this match. If there is any, it can wait for one more week. Because the end result is fixed now.

PSG are leading the table and will travel for this particular game. The stakes we were talking about was the league itself. For the Parisians can clinch the glory with either a draw or a win here at the ground of their closest rival. Even if they lose, the visitors, they can win the title, the next week, or the following week. Only formalities remain now. There is no life in Ligue 1.

Again, calling Lille PSG’s closest rival is an illusion for the fans, and neutrals alike. Because the Les Dogues have been anything but the challenger. Right from the start of the campaign, there was only one team which was going to win the Ligue 1, and it was the mighty, the rich and the supremely talented Paris-Saint Germain.

But Lille should be praised, nonetheless. Not through the PSG thing, but by the virtue of their current position on the table. If there was an award or a trophy for the most improved team in Ligue 1, Lille would have won it easily, while PSG would have come last. No doubt about that.

For the simple reason, that Lille are 2nd on the table, five points above 3rd placed Lyon. While last season, they flirted with the relegation all season and survived the drop by a whisker.

So from 17th to 2nd, in a matter of a season, indeed it’s been some jump. They may not be winning the Ligue 1, but securing the Champions League football will be no mean feat. And they should.
